With
Summer fast approaching and Fall not far behind, we think of new
children entering childcare. Childcare providers are our best link to
providing parents with resources. Immunization records are always an
important piece of information parents are sharing. A vital part of our
work at the VT Department of Health is trying to increase rates for
immunizations by two years old. Children in Vermont are behind on two
very important vaccines. One is a fourth DTaP and the other, Varicella
(Chickenpox). Varicella vaccine is usually given at their one year well
child visit and the fourth DTaP is given at their 18 month well child
visit
Lead testing is also an
important screening tool for children. All children need a lead test at
one and again at two. Elevated levels of lead can affect a child’s
brain, kidneys, and nervous system. Most lead poisoning comes from
eating visible lead dust; peeling and chipping paint creates this lead
dust. Houses built before 1978 may have lead paint. It’s also found in
soil around the home, toys, metal keys, some potter, furniture, hobbies
like stained glass, or reloading shells. Lead can also be in candy from
other countries.
